The Maharaja Myth; Portraiture & Photography in India

with Pramod Kumar, Director of EKA Archiving Services

30 October 2019, 6:30 pm – 7:30 pm
The worldwide obsession with the Maharajas, of their fabulous wealth and their starring role in the ‘exotic-orient’ continues to this day with photography’s central role in perpetuating this myth being seldom acknowledged or understood. This illustrated talk shall look at the tropes of portraiture that the coming of photography elicited in Princely India. It will examine the various modes in which the ruling classes sought to be photographed and the subsequent creation of a larger than life image that the circulation of these images caused.
MIA is delighted to welcome Pramod Kumar KG, Co-Founder of Eka Archiving Services, an Indian museum consulting company which plans and creates archives, museums and cultural complexes. In addition, Pramod has lectured extensively across the world and is a published author with contributions in several books, journals and magazines, and was the founding director of the Anokhi Museum of Hand Printing at Amber, Jaipur.
