Collection, Context and Curation: Jewellery at the National Museum (DELHI, INDIA)

Adults (18 years +)

5 November 2019, 6:30 pm-7:30 pm
Indian jewellery is a blend of technique and mastery. The choices of imagery and specific gemstones make it a marker of identity, object of faith, and often an esoteric microcosm of the entire universe. It is also an aesthetic and stylistic confluence of regional, religious and foreign influences that reflect the genius of Indian craftsmanship and preferences of the patrons and wearers. This lecture will first look at how the permanent collection at the National Museum was built. It will then consider the history of jewellery more broadly, and finally will look at selected masterpieces from the Nizams' Jewellery Collection in Delhi.
MIA is delighted to welcome Komal Pande, Assistant Curator in numismatics and epigraphy and currently in charge of the Jewellery Collection at the National Museum, New Delhi. She specialized in Art History and Aesthetics at M S University Baroda, Gujarat, and has been a research scholar at the School of Arts and Aesthetics at Jawaharlal Nehru University, New Delhi. Komal was a recipient of the Charles Wallace India Trust Fellowship and worked with the collection of coins, medals and other associated objects in the Visual Arts Department at the British Library, London. Venue: MIA Auditorium
This lecture will be translated in to Arabic.
