The Abbasid caliphate was famous for its wealth, power, scientific achievements and global reach. Qatar lay within its sphere of influence, though not always within its political control. Although the historical sources are scanty, the archaeological record of Qatar reveals a peak of settlement during the early Abbasid period, especially in north Qatar, while finds recovered from excavations reveal an intimate engagement with the Abbasid world.
